Málaga Airport

When they issued a Red Weather alert, they weren't kidding, as we made our way to Málaga Airport yesterday morning. I had to catch a flight and the paper-edition Ed offered to drive me there.

To say that it was ‘chucking it down’ was an understatement, as we drove through hail, trying to keep the lights of the car in front in sight, due to the poor visibility, despite it being around one in the afternoon and the wipers going flat out.

We arrived at the airport, having set off with time to spare, and it was functioning normally although out in the apron area it was under about 15 centimetres of water – where the planes taxi to load and unload passengers.

It seemed apart from cancellations to Ceuta and a flight to Switzerland, most flights were on time, with the exception of Ryanair, whose flights had a twelve hour delay. I met up with Nicky Euesden, who used to live in Almuñécar and who had been out visiting from England.

Nicky’s flight was a Ryanair one that was supposed to leave just after midday but was delayed until 22.10h. She didn’t know whether to give up and return to Almuñécar, but at the same time didn’t want here daughter having to drive to the airport and pick her up. When my flight took off at 17.00h, she hadn’t decided what to do, as she certainly didn’t trust Ryanair, believing that they would end up cancelling it.

Dave, the Ed, of the paper edition, got back OK, and arrived before the worst hit Almuñécar, which I will leave to him to tell you.
