The Cursed Jet Skis!

Residents of La Herradura continued their crusade last month against jet skis in the bay and have collected several thousands signatures for a petition.

They had obtained by mid September over 5,000 signatures via their Facebook page, both as a protest about the irresponsible behaviour of many jet-ski users as well as the irresponsible use of the slipway on the beach at the Peña Parda end.

It’s not only the noise produced by these machines but also the danger that they provoke with other beach users, such as snorkellers and scuba divers, as well as people in kayaks and on paddle boards.

Some residents claim that they have seen several jet-skis together carrying out races without any kind of control. However, these users keep an eye out for the municipal drone, so when it approaches they go back to normal use until the drones moves off again.

There’s also the impact on sea life and for a place like the Bahía de La Herradura, where many dolphins and porpoise siting are made, this is a problem. With the jet skis racing about, the dolphins stay well away.

One resident said that they want to see a bit of peace return to the bay, adding, “We want to see kayaks, swimmers, diver and not an invasion of jet skis that destroys it all.”

As for the Town Hall, it says that it can’t do more than it already is doing; i.e., drone patrols. These apparatus take photos of offenders and send the information to the Port Authorities and the Guardia Civil based in Motril Port, so that fines can be issued.
