Obit: Goodbye Jaime

When Dave Darby told me that Jaime 'El Indio' has died, it bowled me over because yet another foreign institution in Almuñécar and a mutual old friend had passed away.

He died Monday the 23rd in hospital after a battle with cancer, ending a presence in Almuñécar dating back to the 70s.

Most will remember Jaime Pérez Molina from his work with Saga in Hotel Helios before retiring but some will remember him from when he rented a small shop on Calle Alta del Mar in the early 80s, selling handmade, costume jewellery. Others will remember him from when he used to run El Dallas Bar on the Paseo del Altillo in the late 80s/early 90s.

Jaime, whose family was originally from Peru, was an American citizen when he arrived with his wife, Virginia Travers in 1977. Previously he worked in minor acting roles in Westerns as an Indian Chief because of his ethnic roots, back when Native Americans were known as ‘Indians.’

Jaime might have been born in Peru, become an American, but he will always be an Almuñequero and will be very greatly missed. Our condolences to Virginia (who follows the Gazette and I hope who will read this) and their son, Zandu, who works in Hotel Bahía and who is the Coach of CB Almuñécar basketball team.
