Rubbish Rebellion

Almuñécar Town Hall has decided to take on the Central Government over the tax on rubbish.

This requires some explanation: towns would take their rubbish to refuse-recycling centres and then came along the separate, recycling hoppers (which never seem to get emptied) bolstered by awareness campaigns for households to separate their rubbish.

Yet here we are and a large percentage of domestic rubbish is all mixed in one rubbish bag that is thrown out each evening for collection by the rubbish-collection crews.

So, the Central Government decided that a bit of persuation wouldn’t go amiss and levied a tax on municipalities according to how much unsorted rubbish they took to the recycling centres.

So, now we’re up to speed, on with the article: Mayor Juan José Ruiz Joya describes this measure as “a dishonest abuse that damages family and small business interests.”

“Here at the Almuñécar Town Council, we consider that this imposition goes beyond what is reasonable and shows a direct aggression towards municipal autonomy and the welfare of our citizens,” said the Mayor.

He added that they were seriously considering taking the Central Government to court because they have an obligation to defend the people of Almuñécar.

He goes on but that is the gist of it.
