We are accustomed to hearing about how beaches are battered along the coastline during spring gales, but in mid August?
This was the situation on Playa Granada in Motril on the 15th when strong, wave action devoured the beach below Los Moriscos leaving a huge step in the beach. The exact same thing had happened in February in the wake of the Karlotta gale.
With the beaches brimming with people, the Town Hall decided to cordon off the beach path with metal barriers and tape.
A day later, heavy machinery arrived to level it out, the best they could, so that beachgoers could return to the area. However, a corner of the lookout tower used by lifeguards had also been left exposed, so fire personnel cordoned off the tower so that its stability could be evaluated.
Mayor Chamorro said, “I only hope that this is the last summer where we have this sort of situation,” referring to the long awaitied breakwater that will protect the breach.
