The 40-metre high telecommunications mast for mobile coverage in the Playa Granada area is now functioning, despite complaints from some locals who live down there.
The fact is that the original residents of Playa Granada have long been demanding mobile coverage, as have most of the residents in the new building there, but there are residents of two urbanizaciones who are complaining about it, citing health fears, etc.
The communications mast belongs to American Towers, which is as its name suggests, an American corporation. It is based in Boston and provides mobile-phone coverage in several countries.
It was completed a while ago but they had been awaiting official approval (waiting for a passing unicorn, as far as getting something out of bureaucrats in the summer goes) which finally came through.
The complaints from some people who live next to it is that… it takes value of their properties, will cause cancer, will have adverse effects on pregnant women and that it “muddies their quality of life,” which they can now complain about using their mobiles.
There is a word for this, which is nimbyism, (not in my back yard) which does not require much explanation.
