The idea of a train line from Algercieras via Málaga to Nerja has long been on the wish list of the Province of Málaga.
However, no Central Government, regardless of which party is in the driving seat, have shown interest for it. To be fair, connecting Motril with Granada, makes more sense as both the ports of Algerciras and Malaga have rail connections.
Undaunted, the Mancomunidad de Municipios de la Costa del Sol Oriental-Axarquía has unanimously proposed an improvement to mobility within the Axarquia.
On the one hand they want an autovía link from the A-7 with Caleta de Vélez and a new link with the said autovía with Benajarafe and El Morche. Oh, and the train link to Nerja.
The Chairman of the said Comunidad, Jorge Martín (PP), expressed his regrets over the lack of a rail service with the Axarquía, as well as traffic congestion on the A-7.
Chairman Martín considers that if the Central Government is willing, the best route for a rail connection could be worked out and that EU funding could be found, as it has been for other rail projects in other parts of Spain.
He went on to complain that in the case of the “A-7 semi-link” in Caleta de Vélez, it is incomplete; you can’t access the A-7 eastbound lanes nor access it for Vélez-Málaga in the opposite direction.
He says that the increase in population makes finding a solution to improvements to traffice flow ever more necessary.
Motions for the development of a plan to provide water for livestock farming, also received unanimous support at the Plenary Meeting.
Editorial comment: Spanish politicians seem to think that money grows on trees or the EU in an exhaustible supply for funding.
