Almuñécar Town Hall has reached a deal with the local bus company Grupo Fajardo for the renewal of the municipal-bus fleet.

Thanks to the accord, there will also be two extra buses by the summer, which are hybrid.

Mayor Juanjo Ruiz Joya thanked the bus company for providing the municipality with new buses even before the Town Hall had requested it. The lease that the company has, stipulated that buses cannot be older than six years yet they are being renewed when they are only 5-years old.

The Mayor pointed out that this purchase will set the company back over a million euros, as they are hybrid vehicles and thus will contribute to lower the CO2 print, as well as reduce noise when passing along the town’s streets and avenues.

The new buses are also adapted for passengers with mobility problems, either through age or infirmity, and together with free bus passes for senior citizens, the updated, bus fleet should increase the use of public transport within the municipality.

Company representative, Juan Pablo Fajardo, explained that the buses are Intouro Hybrid Interurbano, which are made by Mercedes-Benz. These vehicles, he said represent a 5-percent saving in fuel costs, making them the best option for short hauls; i.e., within urban areas.

He said that the smaller bus is a Cítaro Hybrid, also made by Mercedes-Benz, which is especially designed for regular urban services.
