Monk parrots, also known as quaker parrots, (considered an invasive species) are starting to cause a problem in the city of Granada.

Their numbers are escalating both within the city itself and the metropolitan area, so much so that the head of the Zoological Department of Granada University has warned about the damage it will cause to native species of birds.

“We don’t know the exact cause behind it but the quaker parrot (a native of Argentina) is multiplying at a fast rate over the last three years,” said Professor Juan Diego Ibáñez, adding, “Apart from the affect on native species of birds, they can be quite a bother for residence [because of the noise].”

This bird nests in areas close to fields, hence its presence in Bobadilla or Armilla, whereas in the city centre they nest in public parks and other green areas. It eats flowers and blooms, especially almond blossom and causes havoc in crops.

The professor suggests that measures should be taken. He points out that in Madrid, Málaga or Barcelona it’s already too late because there are thousands upon thousands of these birds. Therefore, if we don’t want to end up like that, he said, the parrot population has to be controlled.
