A 64-year-old man was arrested for the theft of a mobile phone worth 800 euros... but that's not what got him caught. Read on...
No, the arrested man was caught because he had tried to leave the bar where he had allegedly stolen the phone without paying his bar bill (five euros).
The incident took place on Thursday night around 21.30h in a bar not far from the bus station in Granada. When the suspect tried to leave, the bar the owner phoned the police – the arrested man is a well known petty criminal.
A police patrol from the Policía Nacional arrived and the bar owner pointed out the suspect across the room.
The officers asked for his ID. They also saw that he was trying to conceal an expensive mobile phone amongst his clothing. When the police examined it, a surprised customer said that it was his – he had left it on the bar beside him but it had ‘disappeared,’ without his realising it at the time.
Both the phone owner and the suspect were taken to the police station where the former made a statement and the latter was booked. The bar owner didn’t bother to go the police station to register an official complaint as he figured that the suspect was in deep enough trouble already, no doubt.
