That's it! There will be no train line connecting Motril to the provincial capital, giving Motril Port a rail outlet.

All political parties, businesses associations, the Port Authorities and the Provincial Chamber of Commerce pulled together to push this through the European Union to be included in The Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

The Mediterranean Corridor crosses six EU countries (Spain, France, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia and Hungary), over more than 6.000 km along the route.

In 2022 a window was opened to suggestions for route modifications, which is when everybody started pulling together to get Motril included and Brussels actually contemplated this crucial link for the province but in the end it wasn’t accepted.

The proposal was examined by Trilogues, which is an informal group that is made up of three members: one from the Commission, one from the Parliament and one from the Council presidency. This is a fast-track mechanism for getting through lengthy bureaucratic procedure.

Consequently, this failure has produced bipartisan squabbling with the opposition party (PP) claiming that Madrid did not do enough, despite Spain holding the temporary presidency for the EU.
