A Sierra Nevada Death

A climber in his early 50's met his death on Sunday after suffering an accident on Sierra Nevada.

GRA SN Mountain Climber Dies DC23The emergency call centre received an alert at 17.15h that day to say that the 52-year-old man from Málaga had fallen some 70 metres.

Sometimes it is difficult to visualise distances but 70 metres is akin to falling off the top of a 20-storey building, approximately.

The accident occurred in the Tajos de La Virgen area within the municipality of Dilar, which is very popular with climbers but has very difficult access.

The coordination centre despatched a rescue team from the Grupo de Rescate e Intervención en Montaña (GREIM).

The 8-man team located the victim but the victim was dead so they could only set about bringing him down, which required the assistance of ski-resort, snow-grooming machinery.

Update: The victim was Javier Arias (52) who was a secondary-school teacher at IES Vicente Espinel (Gaona) in Málaga. He leaves behind a 16-year-old daughter.
