Almuñécar Athlete’s Death

An accident involving a woman on a quad in Arenas del Rey hit the news on Thursday but it wasn't until today that her name was known.

ALM celia bellicurt killed on quadThe 22-year-old woman, Celia Bellicurt, who was originally from Belgium, was resident of Almuñécar and competed as a member of the Club de Atletismo Nerja.

Mayor Juan José Ruiz, said that she was a “very talented athlete both on the track and in jumping events”. She also won a national-level medal in relay-race events.

“Her loss is a hard blow for her family, her friends, her athletics club and for the town of Almuñécar,” he said, adding,” in the name of all Almuñequeros I would like to express my most sincere condolences to her family and friends.”

GRA PON Arenas del Rey Quad Accident DC23As for the accident, 112 received a call around 13.00h Thursday to say that a couple on a quad had fallen down a barranco, known as Las Rajas. When the rescue services got their the man had several factures and was flown to Granada Trauma hospital but the woman was found to have died in the fall.

The accident had actually taken place 15 hours before on Wednesday but it wasn’t until walkers heard groaning coming from the bottom of the barranco that the couple were discovered.
