GRA ALP Orgiva Hippy Commune Dismanteled DC23

This encampment populated by alternative lifestyle individuals and families is considered the largest in Spain. So far eight children who should be receiving schooling but were not attending school have turned up. The authorities also considered that they are living in “conditions of risk.”

This, what some might call a hippy commune, has been in existence for decades and sits within the Parque Natural de Sierra Nevada. Until this raid there were around 100 inhabitants of different nationalities.

However, they had previously received notification that the camp had to be taken down as it illegally occupies national-park lands So far the police have identified 65 people living there.

Moves to shut the commune down began shortly after the Junta de Andalucía began cleaning up the riverbanks of Río Sucio which runs through this area. A large area there was being used as a car park for cars, caravans and vans. Their owners have been told to move on.

During this operation municipal lorries have removed several lorry-loads of rubbish and scrap, according to the Mayor of Órgiva, Raúl Orellana.
