A female, street cleaner in Motril was verbally accosted in the Los Álamos area of town on the 16th of this month.
This barrio is a conflictive area where there is a rubbish/litter problem, especially above a small sports facilities, on which we ran an article earlier in the month.
The incident took place around 08.15h on Thursday last week, soon after the 58-year-old worker had begun her cleaning tasks.
A middle-aged man approached her, shouting, “It’s just not on that these streets are so dirty,” whilst insulting her liberally. According to the cleaner, he followed her around for nearly an hour, continuing with the rant.
There is no doubt about it that there are areas of Motril with a proliferation of rubbish and the street cleaning personnel can’t keep up with it. Their workers’ union as well as the workers’ committee belonging to the company that has the cleaning contract have informed the Town Hall about the situation, as well as complaining about the harrassment that some workers have suffered almost on a daily basis.
The union considers that the problem originates in the Town Council’s alleged drive to dismantle public services. It appears that the Town Hall even recognises these deficiencies and human-resources scarcities.

The people that do this are also the types that dump rubbish into the Room bed areas. Low brains with no social conscience. On the area at the end of housing in la Caleta. You can see discarded litter. On the cliff face. Not passing tourists. But low brains.
There’s no excuse for abusing workers doing their jobs. Today we had a lovely walk around the Parque de los Pueblos de América which was immaculately tended and litter free. However behind the tourist office there is a hugely inaccessible drop with litter that is going to be difficult to clean. Why passers by choose to throw cans and other rubbish there is beyond me. The cleaning staff can’t be blamed for this!
Sadly too many folk could not give a fig about dropping litter…. so antisocial and it’s not as though there are not enough bins about
