The First Female Councillor

Did you know that Almuñécar had its first female Councillor back in 1929? Yup! Franco soon changed that sort of thing, though.

ALM First Female Councillor Carmen González HerreraTo pay homage to Councillor, Carmen González Herrera (1885- 1985), the Asociación Cultural Cruz Alhambra is holding a weekend event (27th/28th), entitled the III Jornadas de Sexitanos Ilustres, explained the present Councillor for Culture, Alberto García Gilabert

Yesterday, Councillor García Gilabert thanked the members of the AC Cruz Alhambra, José Francisco Cabrera and Javier Medina, for the association’s work “towards reminding us of Almuñécar personalities from the past, giving them the importance that they deserve; people who living within their times, strove to make the town better.”

Carmen González Herrera was a woman who was very committed to improving the lot of her fellow citizens, improving hygiene in the municipal market, for example, which used to be in the Plaza de la Victoria. She was Consejala de Abastos, which nowadays would be the Consejala de Comercio. In short, she was a much loved woman who was very socially active, working to better conditions in Almuñécar.

Today a plaque will be unveiled in her honour on Calle Parra, which is where she used to live. Calle Parra, if I am not mistaken, is a side street that connects Calle Trinidad to the church patio.

Editorial comment: Herrera is also the surname of Almuñécar’s first Mayoress, Trinidad Herrera, who occupied the post until recently.
