A Forgotten Laptop & Hoaxes

A forgotten laptop computer set off alarms in a cafeteria on the Gran Via in the city of Granada yesterday.

GRA C&M Bomb ScareThe owners of Cafetería Olimpia came across the laptop, but even though suspecting that somebody must have left it behind by mistake, they contacted the Policía Nacional to be on the safe side.

Officers arrived and evacuated the premises of clients and staff. After examining the Apple computer, letting a sniffer dog trained to detect explosives give it a good sniffing, they declared that it wasn’t dangerous.

People are a bit edgy up there owing to a series of bomb hoaxes on Thursday, warning of bombs; one in the Centro Comercial Nevada and another in the Gran Plaza in Roquetas de Mar.

The hoaxes were circulated via WhatsApp, stating that the Policía Nacional had been put on Alert Level 5, which means that a terrorist attack is imminent. The author warned people not to use “public transport or public places of important interest.”

The Whatsapp message went on to say that according to a Policía-Nacional communiqué, Barcelona, Madrid, Alicante and Valencia had been put on high alert.

However, this hoax is not new as it has been doing the rounds since at least 2016. Furthermore, the Ministerio del Interior assured on the 19th of October that it “does not correspond to reality,” .
