Scum off Nerja Beaches

The Costa Tropical might think that they are the only ones beset by dubious trails of scum just off the beaches, but Nerja and beyond also suffer from this.

NRJ Scum off Nerja BeachesNerja has a cleaning service that clears flotsam from the surface of the water, but there is little that they can do, explains the manager of the said company, Manuel Rivas.

Servimar Axarquía has twelve small craft that carry out this duty along the Axarquia coastline, the crews of which do their best to dissolve these streaks of something unmentionable before they reach the beaches, but more often than not, it is a forlorn task.

It’s not just Nerja over on the Málaga side, either because bathers on other beaches all along the Axarquía coastline complain about a daily appearance of these streaks from Rincón de La Victoria to Nerja.

However, since the sewage-treatment plant came online in Nerja at the end of 2020 there is not so much, but the problem has certainly not disappeared.

The accompanying photo was taken just off El Peñoncillo at the eastern end of Torrox. The Town hall is bombarded by such photos and complaints but they duck and keep quiet, it seems. Of course, there is little that a Town Hall can do about it because this problem belongs to the Junta and the Central Government.

The fact is that the Nerja sewage-treatment plant apart, the other three plants along the coast of Axarquía are old and cannot cope with the summer influx of tourists who flock to the beaches.

Ah, but they all love the dinero; hence the need for beach showers. ☹️
