Another Spanish Champion

The Women's World Cup win is being muddied by the Rubiales scandal, but not so María Pérez's & Álvaro Martin's World Athletics Championships Gold medal wins.

AND Maria Pérez Race Walking ChampionMaría Pérez (born 29 April 1996) from Orce will be received by the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez for her achievement as World Champion in the 20 and 35 kilometre, race-walking, gold-medal win in Budapest.

Álvaro Martín, who won the gold in the men’s category, will join her in the Moncloa (official residence of the Prime Minister).

“Congratulations, Álvaro and María!” wrote the PM on social media, adding, “Our athletes made history with a magnificent double Gold… …Spain is at the top of the World Athleticism Championships in Budapest.”

María arrived at her parents’ house in Orce to be greeted by hundreds of jubilant locals, as well as residents of nearby municipalities.

The Mayor of Orce, José Ramón Martínez, has proposed making her an Honorary Citizen in the next Plenary Meeting of the Town Council.
