Motril Town Hall has decided to carry out roadworks on one of its main thoroughfares, Calle Nueva starting at the beginning f this week.
Business owners are far from happy because they find themselves right in the middle of the height of the tourist season.
The Councillor for Public Works, José Balderas, explained that, apart from filling in potholes, no work has been carried out in the last 20 years. He also explained that the work, consisting mainly of laying a new tarmac surface, would cost 100,000 euros but that it would be carried out in two stages, “to cause the least economic damage to local businesses.”
By today the tarmacking process will have concluded on Calle Nueva and starting next week, they will paint the white lines and zebra crossings, etc.
Many local businesses consider that the Town Hall has chosen a terrible time to carry out this work, especially with the Virgen del Carmen just days away. Some pointed out that suppliers couldn’t reach their premises because the road is closed to traffic
Councillor Balderas considers, on the other hand, that there is never a “good time” to carry out this kind of work as this street is one of the busiest in town, which is why they timed it to coincide when schools had already broken up for the summer holidays.
The main opposition party, the PSOE, say that they have noted the discontent expressed by the population and consider the decision to close both Calle Nueva and Calle Cuevas at the same time, just when there is more traffic in town was not a wise decision.
Editorial Comment: town halls all along the Spain’s coasts carry out roadworks in summer with the sole intention of giving the impression that they are hard working before the swollen summer population. Add to that the elections on the 23rd of this month…
