The far-right, Vox, party branch in Salobreña has included the hawkers along the seafront paseo in their electoral campaign.
They say that local shops are being “asphixiated” by taxes and a lack of clients. They say, that the only businesses doing well are the illegal, North-African, street hawkers.
According to Vox, they have counted 120, improvised stalls along the paseo and that the number is increasing.
Vox candidate, Manuel Martín Montero, says that this kind of illegal activity only benefits the mafias behind them.
“We are letting these people be exploited 16 hours a day, in the sun, under infra-human conditions, without mentioning the clothes-brand fraud,” he said, adding, “they don’t have complaint forms nor a refundable service.”
He concluded that the people who suffer the most are local shop owners because of this illegal competition, as well as tourists, who can’t walk along the paseo because of all the room that the hawkers take up.
