A Financial Drain

Two plainclothes police officers in an unmarked car were surprised to see two men busily prying up rain-drain covers, so they strolled over to investigate.

AND Stolen Rain Drain Covers MY23This took place around 13.15h one day last month, not far from the Málaga train station, Victoria Kent.

The two men, aged 38 and 24 were so surprised when the officers identified themselves as such, that one of them immediately confessed that they were stealing drain covers to sell to a scrap merchant in order to pay off a loan — they had until later that same afternoon to return 200 euros to a loan shark.

The officers inspected the suspects’ car and found seven covers already loaded into the boot and another eight ready to be loaded. They also found several sales bills from scrap merchants from previous deals with stolen drain covers.

Both men were arrested and charged with the theft of public property and damage to street furniture. The stolen drain covers were handed over to municipal workers to be put back where they belonged.
