According to an interesting article by Eugenio Cabezas writing for the Sur Newspaper, there are plans for a new shopping centre near El Ingenio in Vélez-Málaga.
It seems that several companies and investment groups are interested in land which is part of the Prado Rey fairground, amongst them a multinational company.
Fortunately for those interested, the existing Plan General de Ordenación Urbanística (PGOU) would permit such a project there; a multi-leisure development including shops, restaurants along the lines of Plaza Mayor but smaller.
Quite whether another, large shopping centre is necessary more or less next to the El Ingenio one, is an interesting question.
Obviously, for the Town Hall it is, because of the income from building licences and the jobs created, both for its construction and for employees within the shopping centre, but would it put another nail in the coffin of local, small businesses?

It all depends on which type of shops. I guess the so called, more upmarket ones will be used by tourists and wealthier Spanish. Still, more money/taxes for the authorities to squander, on beach signs and street works of art.
How’s the Brent Cross of Playa Granada coming along. Along with its rabbit hutches. !!??
More shops? Haven’t we got enough already?
