Criticism of Motril Mayor at Fitur

Motril's main opposition party, the PSOE (socialists) have heavily criticised the Mayor for "speaking badly of Motril's beaches" at the international tourism fair in Madrid.

MOT Storm Damage to Beach JA23The Secretary, Francisco Sánchez-Cantalejo, considers her actions as “irresponsible” and accuses Mayor Luisa García Chamorro of using the tourism fair solely as a platform from which to launch political discourses: “Instead of promoting our beaches she is destroying our image [as a tourist attraction].”

He went on to state, “she has chosen the worse place to say that Motril’s beaches are in a bad state, but not content with that, she also said that she would take the Central Government to court, mixing things up and involving our town in judicial affairs.”

He considers that the Mayor should stop posing and start negotiating to speed up the bureaucratic process, which is already in progress. He then hit out at her again by saying that the only delay in the process was the eight years of Mariano Rajoy’s time as PM during which he did absolutely nothing; i.e., when her party ran the Central Government.

He finished by pointing out that thanks to the Mayor’s bungling, Motril’s beaches were without half the necessary beach equipment during last summer.

Editorial comment: it is difficult not to agree with Sánchez-Cantalejo – the money that Motril spends on setting up a stand in Madrid during the International Tourism Fair is for promoting the town as a tourist destination and not for scoring political points because the elections are near.
