A car ploughed into a gasolinera fuel pump on the N-432 near Atarfe, resulting in the driver dying shortly after impact.
The 47-year-old driver had lost control of the vehicle on the roundabout from which the gasolinera is accessible. The car rolled several times before hitting the petrol pump.
First investigations indicate that the car was going too fast to take the roundabout. In fact, there are no skid marks that indicate that the driver attempted to even brake.
This accident occurred shortly after 06.00h on Friday and as luck would have it, the fuel bowser that is normally there filling the fuel tanks had still not arrived, otherwise the crash could have resulted in a much larger tragedy.
Fire personnel had to cut the front of the car open to extract the body of the driver. Fortunately, straight after the impact the gasolinera attendant shut off all the fuel taps to the pumps and turned off the electricity supply to the installations.
Despite all these precautions, a small fire broke out in the car but it was instantly suffocated by the fire personnel.
