While some eco-conscious volunteers tackle beaches and seabeds to rid them of rubbish, others scour the slopes of Sierra Nevada doing the same.
Dozens of green-minded volunteers joined ski-station workers, forming an army of a hundred or more, and between them removed 2,000 kilos (two tonnes) of litter.
The operation was organised by Cetursa (the company that runs the slopes), Coca Cola and Chelonia.
Chelonia is a non-profit, international entity, dedicated to scientific research and species conservation in threatened ecosystems.
As for the volunteers, they belong to the Federación Andaluza de Montañismo (FAM), FANDDI, FADI, Rotary Club de Granada, Sociedad Sierra Nevada, Guardia Civil and military personnel, amongst others.
The participants took the Veleta ski-lifts up to just over 3,000 metres up and started making their way down from there. Even in summer it is chilly up there so participants had to wrap up a little.
The rubbish collected was plastic containers, cans and bottles, mostly, but this year there was also a large number of discarded, surgical masks…
Don’t forget, by the way, that starting on the 2nd of July, there is a summer programme consisting of activities such as astronomy, sports, concerts, lasting until the 28th of August.
