A 9-year-old boy drowned in a large,open irrigation pond in the Rambla de Santa María del Aguila, which is in El Ejido, en Almería
The said artificial pond, which is surrounded by a 2-metre fence, holds 43 cu/m of water and has a maximum depth of five metres.
The vicitm’s parents phoned the police when the boy failed to return home for lunch in the afternoon of Sunday the 8th. Later that day at 17.10h the 112 emergency number received a call to say that a boy had been found in an irrigation pond.
The Guardia Civil and the fire service arrived and retrieved the victim from the water and gave him CPR, they were unable to save his life.
Workers from around the area say that on most days there are up to 30 kids swimming in the pond, despite all the verbal warnings and the safety precautions that the installations have in place.
