Bouncing off Boars

On the 8th of this month three women in a car ran into a wild boar on the Granada bypass; the animal died and so did the car.

GRA Boars vs CarsWell, it’s true that the armour-plated cousin of the domestic pig made a mess of the front of the car and the three ladies were a bit dented, too, but the thing is that the number of wild boars is growing as is the number of road accidents involving boars trotting across roads.

So frequent have these ‘wild-surprised boar vs hurtling-metal-box-on-wheels’ wrestling matches become that during the course of 2021 there were over 200 accidents involving animals, 70% of which involved wild boars… in the province of Granada alone.

“There were some involving mountain goats but the vast majority were boars,” said Leiutenant Enrique Garcia, belonging to the Guardia Civil’s environmental department, Seprona.

Moving onto this year, we appear to be proceeding at the same attrition rate; i.e., plenty of bacon bumping (a.k.a., swine swatting) before now and Christmas

In an attempt to limit the number of wild-boars causing road accident, and their own consequent demise, the new autovía that bypasses the city of Granada has under passes for them to get to the other side without crossing over the tarmac.

The officer advised drivers to check their car insurances to make sure that accidents involving animals is included within the coverage – this is not always the case.
