Health Alert: Accuretic

Pfizer has announced on its website that it is withdrawing one of their medicines, Accuretic, from the market because of health concerns.

SPN Health Alert AccreticThis medication that is taken by patients with high blood pressure, has “unacceptable” levels of nitrosamines, which pose a cancer risk, although Pfizer said in a news release “there is no immediate risk to patients taking this medication.”.

Pfizer has not only withdrawn several lots of Accuretic but also its two generic versions distributed by Greenstone: quinapril and hydrochlorothiazide tablets and quinapril HCl/hydrochlorothiazide tablets

Nitrosamines are common in water and foods, including cured and grilled meats, dairy products and vegetables. Everyone is exposed to some level of nitrosamines. These impurities may increase the risk of cancer if people are exposed to them above acceptable levels over long periods of time,” Pfizer said in the news release.

Pfizer recommends that patients who take this medication should consult their doctor about alternative medication.
