The Banco de Alimentos de Granada sent one of its lorries on a mission to recover five tonnes of vegetables on the coast for their stores.
This food bank attends to the nutritional needs of 41,000 people but with the road-transport strike, their stores have been rapidly emptying.
The 5,000 kilos of vegetables in question had been ceded, free of charge to the Food Bank but with the transport strike the produce was stuck at the point of origin
Because the strike pickets had left the main market in Granada (MercaGranada) standing empty, this NGO is facing a supply crisis that required urgent action.
None of the Food Bank’s vans and lorries had had any problem with the strike pickets; the problem was that there was nothing coming in because certain cooperatives that habitually donate produce to the NGO were feeling the squeeze caused by the strike.
So, yesterday morning, one of their own lorries was despatched to the Costa Tropical to pick up cabbage, cucumbers and other vegetables in order for them to be put on the table of those who need them. The lorry made stops to load produce in Motril and Castell de Ferro.
