The Dirección General de Tráfico (DGT) has warned that you can get fined for driving a dirty car - they must have read yesterday's article - just joking!
Basically the DGT has warned that if your car is so dirty that you can’t read the number plate, or the ITV sticker on the windscreen, for example, you could face a fine.
If they judge that your driving is impaired because your visibility is reduced because of dirty windows, you can get fined, as well.
Obviously the quantity of the fine depends on what part of the car is affected and how much: a dirty windscreen which narrows your view of the road could set you back between 80 and 200 euros, for example.
If your windscreen wipers look like they were found at the bottom of a trench at the Somme, 1916, that’s 80 euros.
As mentioned above, your number plate has to be legible because if it isn’t you’re looking at coughing up as much as 6,000 euros as well as lose six points off your driving licence.
You can’t even wash your car in the street without getting fined (under Artículo 4.2 del Reglamento General de Circulación) but the quantity depends on the Town Hall involved but even so you could be relieved of your gelt from anywhere in between 30 and 3,000 euros.
So, there you have it: save water as so much will be squandered in these following days… but not too much because you have to keep your car windows and number plates clean.

I can see a time coming when the water runs out and we’ll all be too dehydrated to drive our cars with shiny number plates…
