Motril is ahead of La Herradura concerning plans for the municipal market, as the one in Motril is now finished and completely reopened to the public.
The Mayor, Luisa María García Chamorro, held a reopening ceremony around the middle of last month of the San Agustín municipal market, which was originally built in 1955. She unveiled a plaque for the occasion.
One major aspect of this market overhaul was making it “self sufficient” in the terms of energy consumption.
All this cost considerable funds, which were supplied, by the most part, thanks to EU funding (FEDER) thanks to the plan to reform the building along the lines of “Sustainable Construction.”
In her address at the ceremony she expressed special thanks to the stallholders for their “collaboration and patience.”
The Vice-Mayor, Nicolás Navarro Díaz, explained how a whole, new glass roof was placed, as well as changing all the door jambs and window frames, and floor tiling, and not one to be accused of modesty, stated that Motril’s renovated market was a head and shoulders above anybody else’s in the area because of its electrical system using “electrical cogeneration.” (No idea – don’t ask.)
The market was kept open during most of the process, except during potentially dangerous, installation work.
Editorial comment: Sr. Navarro is correct about Motril market in comparison with others: in first place in Motril, with a completely finished market… in second comes La Herradura’s, which should be finished before winter and lagging at least two laps behind is Almuñécar’s one which remains just a hole in the ground.
