There was a fire amongst wild sugarcane next to the Salobreña satellite village of La Guardia that broke out about midday.
The first on the scene was the Salobreña detachment of fire personnel with their pickup fire truck, followed about 20 minutes later by the large fire engine from the Motril Fire Department.
The fire first consumed about 300 lineal metres of sugarcane that runs parallel to the entrance land of La Guardia with flames eating away from both ends. Then, it turned at a rightangle, following the border of a field lined with cane, heading towards an apero about 150 metres away.
Meanwhile, down near village itself, the fire calcinated completely a semiabandoned caravan where neighbours told me that a squatter had been living before.
It was thanks to Bernadette and Patrick Van del Veld that I was able to enter a gardened/orchard area that they looked after and get some close photos of the flames and damage.
Both Patrick and their stepson, Carl Volckaert helped the fireman on the property out with their garden hose, dousing the thick sugarcane growing up against the small tool shed on the land. In fact, the fireman climbed up onto the roof of the small building to have greater access to the nearby flames.
The fire had pretty much burnt itself out by 14.30h. I spoke with one of the firemen, asking about the origin of the fire but it was still too early to know.
Also present was the Policía Local and the Guardia Civil.

20mins after the Salobrena fire persons were on scene. Did they walk or use a horse from Motril. A long 20 mins to wait for the big boys to help out.!!
