The Guardia Civil traffic police rescued five children and six adults who were stuck in their cars because of ice on the road in Güéjar Sierra.
The A-4030 between that said municipality and El Dornajo was intransitable owing to the thick ice on the tarmac, according to the emergency, call-centre, 112.
The excursionists, all of whom were British, had decided to attempt to use the road despite the conditions and soon could go no further when they lost traction.
The call centre received a call around ten in the morning yesterday, which alerted both the Guardia Civil and Policía Local. It took until the early afternoon to conclude the rescue of these eleven excursionists.
At one point some of the occupants had to crawl on hands and knees in order to cross the icy tarmac, according to the Guardia Civil.
Editorial comment: Even if you do live on the Costa Tropical, it’s not a bad idea to buy snow chains and know how to fit them, especially if you want to go up into the mountains in the winter. In this case, it seems, snow chains were not enough.
