A couple in their 90s were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation following a fire in their house in Los Guájares.

A neighbour phoned 112 minutes after 01.20h this morning to report the fire on Calle Virgen del Carmen in Guájar Alto.

The Motril fire service was immediately alerted, as well as an ambulance and the Guardia Civil.

The 91-year-old husband and his 96-year-old wife were both taken to Hospital Santa Ana de Motril with minor burns as well as having inhaled smoke.

According to the Guardia Civil, the fire started in one of the bedrooms after a candle set light to the bedding. The rest of the dwelling was not affected by flames or the smoke, so it remains habitable.
