The Fishermen's Guild in Motril has reported repeated thefts on some of their fishing boats whilst docked in Motril Port.
Consequently, they are demanding more security from the Port Authorities and regret that the theft of fishing tackle and nets, etc makes their work more difficult.
The Chairman of the Fishermen’s Guild, Ignacio López Cabrera, pointed out that several fishing boats were damaged last week after thieves had broken windows and forced locks to gain entrance to the cabins. In the cases of two other vessels, tools and fishing gear were stolen.
“We feel helpless because of the lack of security in the port fishing area, and because boat owners have to carry out repairs and replace losses caused from their own pockets,” complained, Sr. López.
“We cannot understand how, with all the security measures within the port area, things like this can happen,” he added.
It’s certainly not easy to get into the port area as there is aways a guard on the gates. Furthermore, both the Guardia Civil and the Policía Nacional patrol the dock areas. Not only that but the dock area used by fishing boats has several CCTV cameras.
