The city of Granada is amongst the 25 best tourist destinations in the world, according to the prestigious travel magazine, National Geographic.
In its online edition the magazine compiled a list of interesting places to visit during 2022, taking into account five categories: Nature, Adventure, Sustainability, Culture & History and Family.
Granada, the only destination with in Spain, obtains excellent marks as a destination for all the family, mainly because of the Alhambra. The palace-cum-fortress is the top reason that tourist have for visiting the city.
In fact, National Geographic describes Alhama as a “marvel of geometrical beauty,” going on to say, “…the mathematical wizardry on display here that is particularly fascinating for families. Intricate mosaics, arabesques (a repetitive, stylized pattern based on a floral or vegetal design), and muqarnas (ornamental vaulting) make the Alhambra a masterpiece of geometric beauty—and a colourful classroom for age-appropriate exploration of math concepts, such as shapes, symmetry, proportion, and measurement.”
Granada shares its place in family section with Lycia, Turkey; Eastern Shore (Maryland); The Danube and the Caribbean island of Bonaire.
Of course, the city of Granada is much more than just the Alhambra because the narrow alleys of the old Jewish quarter of the city, the Realejo, the Albaicín with its view of Alhambra from across Río Darro and of course, the carmenes, to mention just a few of places to visit whilst there.
