There was a small fire above Gambullón lane, below the castle, which did have the residents of the barrio de El Tajillo concerned, however.
The rapid intervention from the Motril fire service, backed by Salobreña-based fire-fighter volunteers and Infoca personnel, had the fire under control by eight in the evening.
According to the Policía Local de Salobreña, the fire would have begun a couple of hours earlier, judging by the calls coming in from locals to say that youths had set light to the vegetation just above el Camino del Gambullón.
The flames had soon started making their way up the hillside, causing a lot of smoke and heading towards the lower housing up there belonging to the Barrio de El Tajillo.
At first there was concern that they might have to order the temporary evacuation of houses on Calle Tajillo, but it finally proved unnecessary.
The Mayor, Mª Eugenia Rufino, thanked the Motril fire personnel for their prompt reaction, who tackled the fire both from below and from above so that it didn’t reach the housing. She also thanked the Policía Local and the Guardia Civil.
The Guardia Civil will open an investigation into the origin of the fire, explained the Mayor.
