I went along to The Hideaway Bar in La Herradura for a fund raising event for a cancer treatment for Ann Henhoeffer, which raised 3,115 euros on the night.

People from not only La Herradura but also Nerja, Frigiliana, Competa and Sayalonga provided items to be raffled and the bar was packed.

Ann needs 50,000 euros for Dendritic-Cell Treatment and as of the 14th of this month they had reached 30,000 euros thanks to the fund-raising activity organised by friends and family.

Some of the other fund-raising events have been the S-pain-T Night, courtesy of Paint With Janet and organised by her sister and the Gala night at El Gaucho in Puerto Banús (which had some hiccups but still managed to raise 300 euros) and another event in Chambao de Joaquín in La Herradura.

Husband, Christopher Jenkins met his soul mate, Anne and about five years ago both of them moved to La Herradura. Ann, amongst other activities, has been very active in the Amigos del Mar and the Playa Patrol environmental-protection projects, both of which are highly successful.

Since the mid-1990s, dendritic cells have been used in clinical trials as cellular mediators for therapeutic vaccination of patients with cancer. Dendritic cell-based immunotherapy is safe and can induce anti-tumour immunity, even in patients with advanced disease.

In DC-based cancer immunotherapy, DC is obtained from a patient and modulated ex vivo in order to entice the immune system toward tumour elimination. Several approaches have been on the evaluation for long-term anti-tumour immune responses by DCs. On the other side, combination of DC vaccines with other cancer therapies, like chemotherapy and monoclonal antibodies could confer efficient cancer therapeutics.
