Researchers and university professors participated in a 3-day event in Motril entitled: III Congreso Internacional de Patrimonio Industrial y la Obra Pública.
The congress, which was organised by the Fundación Patrimonio Industrial de Andalucía (Fupia), involved around 100 speakers, experts in research, education and diffusion, concerning the kind of heritage that Motril possesses, such as the old sugar mills, which are in the process of being restored as museums.
The Territorial Delegate for Tourism, Gustavo Rodríguez, said that there are many town halls that are trying to restore old buildings in order to recuperate them as municipal heritage and “fix in the collective mind of society” what these structures represented and could continue to represent.
Along these lines he mentioned the sugar mill in Guadix, which never actually went into production but is now being restored as a Centro de Interpretación del Geoparque.
Sr. Rodriguez said that tourist are looking for more than just “sunshine and beaches” and want to explore these palaces of industry, “seduced by the beauty contained within the giant installations.”
