Fines Will Be Returned

It's now official and not just a possibility; all those fined during the first and second lockdowns will have their fines reimbursed.

SPN Fines during LockdownNot only does this mean that the sums received from the 172,482 fines imposed will have to be paid back but also those still in the pipeline will be cancelled.

This comes about after the extreme-right party, Vox, considered the lockdown to be illegal and took it before the Tribunal Constitucional which decided in their favour. Thus 1,142,127 fines that were issued by the different administrations between the 14th of March 2020 and the 21st of that same year were deemed unconstitutional.

The process has already begun but the Ministerio de Política Territorial requires that those who wish to be reimbursed should provide a bank account to which the returned sum can be paid over. This can be done via the Internet.

According to the Ministerio de Política Territorial, of the 481,969 cases processed up to May, 172,482 had resulted in fines that had been paid, 87,826 had been transferred to regional and municipal administrations to deal with, 54,193 were still to be decided upon and 11,206 had been rejected.

As for regional figures, the two regions that handed out most were Andalucia (195,986 fines) and Madrid (184,517)
