A man working on felling a palm tree on a piece of private land in Nerja Tuesday morning was killed when it toppled over onto him.

The accident, which was witnessed by a bystander who immediately phoned 112, occurred around 09.30h in the proximity of Río Chíllar on the edge of the town. The caller explained that the man was trapped under the tree trunk.

The emergency call centre despatched an ambulance and the Guardia Civil, as well as the fire service. Personnel from the fire service managed to lift the fallen tree off the 54-year-old.

Medical sources confirmed the death of the victim and the Guardia Civil reported the incident to the Centro de Prevención de Riesgos Laborales and the Inspección de Trabajo.

The victim, Manuel M.G., who was from Maro but resided in Frigiliana, leaves behind a wife and three children.
