Whilst the developments in Afghanistan rock the West, arrangements have quietly been made between the USA and Spain.
Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, had a telephone conversation with the US President, Joe Biden, to discuss the use of US bases on Spanish soil as “hubs” for evacuees airlifted out of the turmoil in Kabul and its airport.
During this 25-minute phone conversation the following was discussed: the US bases of Morón (Sevilla) and Rota (Cádiz) would provide temporary accommodation for foreign citizens and Afghans who worked for them, before they are flown to their home countries, the case of the former, or countries of refuge for the latter.
Both leaders expressed their concern for developments in Afghanistan as well as the need for the international community to act in a coordinated manner demonstrating solidarity with the plight of the Afghans.
The Spanish PM explained that Spain has been working on becoming a hub for the Servicio de Acción Exterior de la Unión Europea.
Yesterday, 64 evacuees landed at the Torrejón military air base in a Spanish Air Force aircraft, all of whom were Afghan citizens that had been in the employment of the United States.
