Firework Causes Hill Fire

Villamena Town Hall has called upon locals via their Facebook page not to let off fireworks, following the fire caused by one Saturday evening.

GRA Brush Fire in Cozvijar AG21“Attention: we ask the residents of Cozvijar and Conchar, owing to the high temperatures, not to light rockets or any kind of firework, as they might cause a fire like the one that broke out last night on Calle Eras and Calle Nogal in Cozvíjar. We would like to thank all the neighbours for their rapid intervention in putting it out,” read the statement..

The 112 call centre received several calls around 22.45h on Saturday reporting the brush fire on an area of wild grass and shrubs.

Thanks to the efforts by locals with hose pipes and buckets of water, the Granada fire service, although alerted by 112, were not required.

According to the Town Hall, the fire was caused by somebody letting off a rocket; hence the call for people not to use them.

Editorial note: the two villages of Cozvíjar and Cónchar were joined administratively in 1974, forming the Municipality of Villamena (with the Town Hall situated in the former). It is situated in the north of the Valle de Lecrín.
