Not surprisingly, either, the 44-year-old man has an extensive criminal record, before this latest selection of attempted murder, resisting arrest, threatening behaviour and driving without a valid licence.
What sparked this ‘little tiff’ was that a Guardia Civil officer attempted to hand him a court summons concerning an alleged driving offence; possessing a licence drained of points and thus a dud.
It was on the 22nd of January this year around 18.00h that traffic police tried to waive down a BMW 320 on the A-92 to inform the driver that he committed driving offence. However, the driver continued on his merry way, paying no attention to the grumpy policemen other than to wave as he sped past.
The Guardia Civil back at their Head Quarters in Granada checked their computer records and identified the owner of the vehicle, discovering that he had lost all the points off his driving licence. Their records showed that he lived in Atarfe and was “an aggressive person,” which was the Understatement of The Year contender.
So, off set an officer from the investigation department of the DGT accompanied by the crew of a patrol car on the 9th of February. The idea was to hand over the court summons, decline an invitation for tea and buns wave farewell and return, but it was not to be.
No, they actually came him across before they reached his home, driving a van, so they waved him down. He was not impressed, in fact he jumped out of the van and advanced on the policeman with an axe that would have impressed Jack Nicholson. Just so that there was no doubt about his intentions, he mentioned that he was going to “kill them all.”
One officer managed to deflect a blow from the axe using his extending baton at the same time as the other officers reduced the assailant. Reducing the man was no easy task, even with four police officers determined to achieve it, because three of them sustained injuries.
The final twist to the story was that the man had been serving time in the provincial prison in Albolote but released on parole on the condition that he behaved for the rest of the duration of the sentence. There was no mention of an axe in the parol conditions so he is now back in residence in the said prison.
