A restaurant in Torrox-Costa allegedly forced infected staff to continue working under threat of being sacked if they refused.
According to the Policía Nacional, the establishment owners, naturalised Spaniards of Argentinian origin, forced a member of staff (working illegally) with Covid to continue at his post and say that it was just a cold if asked by other staff owners.
Before long two cooks and a waiter had Covid symptoms, too. They went for tests and gave positive readings for their PCRs. All of these staff were illegally employed as they could not work legally here being of a foreign nationality.
They told the owners of the establishment (Cafetería de Javier El Chicle) that they had Covid but instead of sending them home, one of the owners allegedly told them to get back to work otherwise they would lose their jobs.
Again, according to the police fruit of their investigations, he told the illegal staff members to memorise the Social Security details of people who were legally employed elsewhere, so that they could recite the information if there were a labour inspection.
Finally on the 16th of December, the police carried out an inspection of the cafetería, together with Social Security inspectors, ending in the arrest of the 40-year-old couple, charged with offences against workers rights, an offence against public health and forgery.
