A woman died after a fall near a recently inaugurated cliff-edge walkway, part of a tourist attraction known as the Ruta del Saltillo in Canillas de Aceituno.
The 56-year-old woman from Málaga, who plunged 50 metres to her death after toppling sideways over the edge of the barranco, had been in the company of her spouse at the time.
The Guardia Civil, mountain-rescue team, EREIM, had the task of recovering the body, given the difficult access to the point where the victim had come to rest. The body was then transferred by helicopter to Málaga.
The accident occurred at 14.30h yesterday, next to the elevated walkway that skirts the side of a steep barranco through which the Río Almanchares runs.
The victim leaves behind a husband, two adult children and four grandchildren.
It was only a week ago that the pasarela (walkway) was inaugurated, which had been financed with funds from the Provincial Council; some 600,000 euros. This elevated path is part of the route bearing the same name that runs between Sedella and Canillas de Aceituno.
