Salobreña Mini-Marina?

SAL Caleta-Guardia Paseo OnLWhere today there is only a seawall made from boulders in front of the old sugar factory, Salobreña hopes to restore the beach from yesteryear.

The Mayor of Salobreña, María Eugenia Rufino, not only hopes to get this project approved but also to include extending the paseo right the way along from La Guardia.

In order to regenerate the old beach there, it would be necessary to remove the seawall from in front of the old sugar factory and rebuild it near the Plaza del Lavadero, which would leave the tide and currents to deposit sand there through a natural process.

But it doesn’t stop there because the Town Council envisages La Caleta being turned into a mini-marina; a small dock and a place for leisure craft to drop anchor. The truth is that the Caleta has a long history as the area for the local fishing industry; somewhere for the fishing boats to anchor. So, the idea of being safe anchorage for leisure boats is not far fetched.

We’re talking about something small because the idea of building a full-blown marina was ruled out long ago because the area simply was not right for it.

To bring this project to life the Town Hall would have to cede this small area of the Salobreña shoreline to Costas so that it can be included in the Dominios Públicos Marítimos y Terrestres in order to extend the paseo. The next step would be for the Town Council and the owners of the old sugar mill, which is Heritage of Cultural Interest (BIC) to draw up a project for the mini-marina.

The Mayor considers that the project would not be too expensive and is totally realisable.

All of these project were being discussed over 20 years ago when I first bought my house in La Caleta!! The people waiting for jobs in these ‘hotels’ are now all old men!! This speculation has been going on for over 30 years…and that’s all it is…Speculation!!

I need to work on my sarcastic tone. Neither of these projects will get finished in our lifetime. The mayor is living in dreamland with another lavish project. The hotel project was on hold long before Covid came along.

It’s doubtful because they are at different points administratively speaking. The mini-marina – little more than a sheltered anchorage with no facilities – is little more than an idea whereas the hotels, although a long way from materialising, at least have the infrastructure in place.

The marina and the new hotels on the beach are scheduled to open on the same date?
