The Motril Port Authorities are finalising the paperwork for putting the abandoned Russian freighter up for auction.
The Zapolyarye is abandoned, in the sense that the company (MSCO) that owns it has abandoned it after it went bust, but there is still a few crew members onboard, who have been there since it docked two years ago.
The Spanish law courts authorised the P.A. in November last year, to auction it off and thereby get back the money owed to the port for docking fees – somewhere over a million. However, the pandemic made an appearance and the whole process ground to a halt.
On Tuesday the 27th of this month the Board of the Port Authorities will meet and announce the conditions of the auction so that those companies that are interested can bid for the ship, valued at 3.18m euros. Over a dozen companies have already expressed their interest.
