Almuñécar Palm Pruning

ALM Palm PruningYou might have noticed already, if you live in Almuñécar or La Herradura, that the yearly palm-pruning campaign has begun.

It should take the municipal maintenance workers a while as there are over 10,000 such trees on public land within the municipality, distributed along streets, seafront promenades and in squares.

It would have started earlier but there was trouble over awarding a contract for the work; hence the municipal workers ending up doing it.

The Councillor for the Environment, Sr. Aragón, said that work commenced in the centre of town and around schools, after which it will be the turn of the paseos marítimos before moving on to frequented streets outside the centre of town. All told, it will take several weeks.

As far as La Herradura goes, the first trees to be pruned will be on the Plaza de San José and along the  Avenida Prieto Moreno. After than, it’s the ones along the Paseo Andrés Segovia.

Finally, he pointed out that the lorry with the extending ladder with a platform was needed in many cases as some palms are between four and five metres high.

Editorial comment: many people living in flats along streets where the fronds from palm trees rub against their windows will be very pleased because these trees are literally highways for rats into their homes. However, the law prevents them doing something about it by cutting the fronds off.
